Preparing to paint your interior doors? Here’s how to achieve a perfect finish.
There’s no need to remove the interior doors from their hinges. Simply place a plastic sheet or newspaper underneath the door to catch any paint drops. Remove any doorknobs or locks and place in a safe place.
Use a medium or fine grade sandpaper to get the door looking and feeling as smooth as possible. It is best to try and avoid making it look too ‘polished’ – the paint will stick better if the surface has a small amount of grip.
If you’re painting a flat door with no paneling or molding, we recommend you choose a 4-inch (10cm) brush or a small roller. Painting paneled doors? You’ll need a small 2-inch (5cm) brush. [For more paintbrush tips and tricks, read our guide to choosing the perfect paintbrush here.]
Use a cloth or a sponge to slightly dampen (not soak) the door surface. This trick will help to increase the time the paint takes to dry, giving you more time to apply it, reducing brush marks.
A good quality primer will help the paint glide on more smoothly. Apply one coat of Dulux Water-Based Gloss Primer suitable for wooden surfaces and let dry (check the drying instructions if you’re unsure how long it takes).
Apply the paint in even, broad strokes across the surface of the door. If you can, try and avoid going back over surfaces already painted – this will help you create an even finish. We recommend applying two coats, allowing the paint to dry fully in between each coat. Once the door is painted and dry, put back the hardware and admire your handiwork!
Painting your interior doors is a easy and affordable way to refresh your home without a full renovation. With proper preparation, right tools, and high-quality products like Dulux Water-Based Gloss Primer and Dulux Paint, you can achieve a professional, smooth, and durable finish that enhances your interiors instantly.
Whether your goal is to modernise your space with crisp whites or add a pop of colour for contrast, a freshly painted door can make a significant difference in your home’s overall aesthetic. Take your time with the prep work, allow each coat to dry properly, and enjoy the satisfaction of a beautifully renewed space — one door at a time.
For Singapore's humid climate, a durable water-based enamel like Dulux Gloss Finish is ideal. It is hard-wearing, easy to clean, and resists the effects of moisture, ensuring a beautiful, long-lasting finish. Its low-odour formula also makes the painting process more pleasant for interior spaces in your home.
The best colour depends on your interior style. A classic crisp white or a soft ivory creates a clean, timeless look that complements any decor. For a bold, modern statement, consider a sophisticated charcoal grey or black. This can create a dramatic contrast that elevates the design of your Singapore home.
A semi-gloss or gloss finish is best for interior doors. These finishes, like Dulux Gloss Finish, are highly durable, scratch-resistant, and easy to wipe clean, making them perfect for high-traffic surfaces. The subtle sheen also beautifully highlights the door's architectural details, providing a polished and professional look.
For a professional and long-lasting result, interior doors typically require two coats of paint applied over a quality primer. The first coat provides a solid base, while the second ensures full, even coverage and brings out the true depth of the colour. Always allow the paint to dry completely between each coat.
Yes, using a primer is highly recommended, especially on bare wood or when making a dramatic colour change. A quality product like Dulux Water-Based Gloss Primer ensures better paint adhesion, creates a smoother finish, and blocks stains. This crucial step guarantees a more durable and professional-looking result for your door.
