Your exterior painting checklist

Step 1: Gather your tools

Your tools will fall into two categories: preparation tools and painting tools.

Preparation tools:

• Ladder – likely to be graded by the relevant authority in your country. Aim for a ladder suitable for light commercial trade use.
• Paint scraper.
• Sanding strips or a sanding attachment on a drill.
• Wood filler, bonding glue, caulk and other sealants necessary to repair any damaged areas.
• Gloves, facemask and other safety equipment suitable to your project.

Painting tools:

• Paint – suitable for exterior use, such as the Dulux Weathershield range of products.
• Brushes – if you are using an oil-based paint, choose brushes with natural bristles, whereas a water-based paint is better with a synthetic brush.
• Rollers and paint tray – select the pile (thickness of the wool or synthetic material of the roller) based on the surface you’re painting. The more textured or rough the wall, the deeper the pile required. A long extension handle can also help you reach more inaccessible spots.

Expert tip

If your project takes longer than a day, rather than wash your brushes each evening, wrap the bristles with clingfilm to keep them from drying out and save yourself cleaning time.

Step 2: Repair the surface

Exteriors are at the mercy of the elements. Signs of wear and tear need to be dealt with now. Whether doing it yourself or bringing in professional help, make sure that the whole exterior surface has been carefully assessed for damage. Primer cannot be applied to surfaces that are damp, mouldy or mildewed.

Step 3: Clean the surface

It is vital that your exterior surface is clean and dry before you apply any paint. Skipping this stage will lead to an imperfect finish and ultimately more repairs. Chalk deposits can build up on exterior paint, but they can be removed by pressure washing. Make sure any loose or peeling paint has been scraped back and sanded.

Expert tip

Older exteriors may be covered with lead-based paint, which can be dangerous, so always take extra care when scraping and sanding surfaces you’re not 100 per cent sure about.
