Use colour to rejuvenate worn woodwork

A simple coat of paint can give exterior woodwork a new lease of life.

If you’ve ever painted outdoor timber, you’ll notice that the wood naturally weathers in the sun, wind, and rain. You can’t control the elements but you can control how efficiently your woodwork endures these harsh conditions. The key is to pick a quick-drying weatherproof paint that’s designed for use on wood and resists cracking, peeling and blistering.

Equally as important is good planning and preparation. Before painting, make sure you sand down rough areas, remove old or peeling paint, fill in cracks with a good quality wood filler, and then use a primer designed for exterior woodwork (make sure the primer is completely dry before applying your first coat). Retain the colour and finish of traditional wood stained window frames with a wood stain, or brighten up discoloured paint to create a fresh and crisp white feel.
